Understanding Chrome OS Organizational Unit Migration

Organizational Units (OUs) govern device-level policies in Google Workspace, including Wi-Fi configurations, kiosk mode settings, sign-in restrictions, and forced app installations. When students graduate or hardware transitions between school buildings, moving devices to target OUs ensures immediate policy compliance.

How to Bulk Move Chrome OS Devices Across OUs in Google Sheets

1. Retrieve Current Device Inventory or Start Blank

In Google Sheets, go to ExtensionsSheetOpsChrome OS Devices:

  • Fetch with Filters: Export devices from an existing source OU (with optional child OU inclusion).
  • Just the Sheet: Generates a blank Chrome OS template. Paste device serial numbers into the Serial Number column.

2. Enter Destination Organizational Unit Paths

In the Org Unit Path column:

  • Type or paste the destination path (e.g., /High School/Grade 10 or /Repairs/Quarantine).
  • To reassign a full roster, enter the new path in the top cell, then double-click or drag down the cell fill handle.
  • Modified cells immediately turn pastel yellow for visual verification.
Tip

Ensure destination OU paths start with a forward slash (/) and match an existing organizational unit in your Google Workspace directory.

3. Highlighting Chrome OS Rows for Batch Relocation

Select the checkboxes in the Apply Changes column corresponding to all devices you want to transfer. Drag down across multiple rows or select the column range and press Spacebar.

4. Reviewing Device Relocation Logs and Output

SheetOps executes grouped moveDevicesToOu requests:

  • Completed rows revert from yellow back to white.
  • The Change log column displays real-time confirmation:
    • ✓ Updated on successful transfer.
    • ✗ Error: Org unit not found if the path is invalid.

  • Annual Grade Transitions: Export your entire senior class OU and update the paths to an alumni or deprovisioning staging OU.
  • Repair Quarantine: Keep a dedicated /Repairs OU with restricted network access to isolate broken or compromised laptops.
  • Paste by Serial Number: When receiving a physical cart of returned laptops, use a barcode scanner to paste serials into a blank sheet and batch-move them into the target classroom OU.

Do Chrome OS devices reboot when moved to a new Organizational Unit?

No. Devices do not reboot immediately, but new policies (Wi-Fi, apps, restrictions) apply automatically the next time the device syncs with Google's servers.

Can I move Chromebooks across different sub-OUs in one sheet?
